REVIEW

Matrine is a optically active natural occurring alkaloid found in plants from the Sophora genus, and is a component of the traditional Chinese medical herb Sophora flavescens Ait. It has a variety of pharmacological effects, including anti-cancer effects, and action as a kappa opioid receptor and mui-receptor agonist. Matrine potent in vitro and in vivo antitumor activities are via inhibition of cell proliferation, inducing differation and apoptosis, reducing invasion and metastasis of tumor cell. Matrine and the related compound oxymatrine also have an antifeedant effect against Formosan subterranean termite.
